Vaseline Rocks

I think it was at the last VegOut when I mentioned putting Vaseline on a wound in cases where Neosporin was unavailable. In my flashback, I recall Ender being especially skeptical about this claim. You thought I had forgotten about the shame I suffered in your mockery, but you are wrong!

A handful of studies have found that when wounds are kept moist and covered, blood vessels regenerate faster and the number of cells that cause inflammation drop more rapidly than they do in wounds allowed to air out. It is best to keep a wound moist and covered for at least five days.

Another common mistake is applying antibiotic ointments, said Dr. Mark D. P. Davis, a professor of dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. These ointments may keep the wound moist, he said, but they can also lead to swelling and an allergic reaction called contact dermatitis. Plain and simple Vaseline, applied twice a day, works fine.

Actually, scabs can promote scarring, and air-drying is a terrible remedy for cuts.

The most common mistakes people make that lead to scarring, he says, are: letting wounds dry out (an antibacterial ointment or even petroleum jelly should be applied), picking off scabs and waiting too long before getting medical attention for a wound that is large or healing poorly.

Damn straight! Yes, this has been bothering me for the last few weeks.

Veg Out 4 Day IV

This was a short day for me, since I had to catch the bus. We took a nice tour of the OSU campus and played their odd statue instrument thing. We also admired the creepy “person trapped in a plaster egg” sculptures, and Ender fell victim to Buckeye pollen or something. The bus was ok, but we had to rescue 3 people in Zanesville, OH that had been left behind by their bus driver.

I ended up taking an unmarked taxi for a taste of terror. He didn’t even have a meter. I tried to get $3 change back, and all he had was a handful of coins from his pocket and some dirty coins in his cup-holder. I ended up with an odd-looking half-dollar, some nickels, and a bunch of coins that do not look legit or American.

Veg Out 4 Day III

Sleep was at a premium, since I had to share the giant air mattress with Ender. This resulted in a dangerous game of “bounce the other person off the mattress” with both sides taking tremendous losses. We didn’t make it up for breakfast, but this was just as well since Kungfucius was having a bunch of people over for an epic BBQ. The hamburgers he got were fantastic, and everyone ended up completely full.

Veg Out 4 Day II

We awoke to some truly blinding light coming into Kungfucius’ living room early that morning. It was ok though, because we were in time to have a huge breakfast at Marshalls (a restaurant, even though the sign was stolen from the clothing store). The pancakes there were maybe 1.25 feet in diameter, and they were especially thick. I went with some egg, toast, and sausage patties so that I would not be sick. Everything tasted great, although no one was able to finish both pancakes. There was also a small parade going on.
