I moved KOLAAP onto the SS!AB webspace, because SS!AB’s package has been improved to the point where it can easily handle the traffic from both sites. This should significantly cut down on the amount I pay yearly for webspace. It was pretty easy to make the move, and in fact the hardest part of the process was getting support to email me at the correct email address. I’d changed it previously, but the support emails kept going to my old email address. This inevitably led to tons of back and forth where the support tech would refuse to answer questions from new_email until I forwarded the email from old_email to new_email and repeated the question.

I also grouped all my picture folders into one umbrella folder. This involved a ton of search/replace queries and horrible regex redirection, but I think I’ve finally gotten it sorted out.

Well, with WP 2.7, I’ve changed up the theme to the very polished Vigilance theme. It’s got a lot of handy features out of the box, including customizable sidebars and a variety of header and sidebar formatting options. It even has a pre-built child theme for modifications. Even more importantly, KOLAAP now has threaded comments. I’m going to experiment with them on this page before seeing if it is something worth having on the anime page. One thing I’ve noticed is that threaded comments can make it harder to tell where the newest comments are. It’d be nice if there was some kind of auto-hide/expand feature, similar to what they have on Digg.

That’s more like it. RC2 dropped, and it is rumored to be very close to what will be shipped. Fortunately, this version actually works.

The dashboard widgets actually load and can be dragged/dropped. The backend loads instantly again and the plugin update fetcher works correctly. Even the automatic updater for the core WP files works (Tools >>> Upgrade). All in all, this RC is a great deal more impressive than the last one.

Woo, running the first release candidate of WP 2.7. Everything is all different looking in the back end, but waaaaay more intuitive.

Woo, running the first release candidate of WP 2.7. Everything is all different looking in the back end, but waaaaay more intuitive. I guess all those usability studies were worth it. I am typing this from the QuickPress, but it would have been nice if it at least had the quicktag buttons here.

The left sidebar with expanding menus is much better for navigation. The back end seems a little sluggish right now, but maybe that will be cleaned up. I was excited to try installing a plugin from within the admin area, but unfortunately the search function in the WP plugin database sucks, and even searching for the author’s name returned no results.

I’m not sure that this release is fully baked just yet, so I’m going to hold off on installing it on the anime blog. I have enabled threaded and paged comments, but I don’t think my current theme can take advantage of the new options. It looks like it may take some work to enable threaded comments in the theme, so that’s something I’ll have to add to the child theme on SSAB.

I went back through my archives and recategorized/tagged 75 posts from the huge number of posts that I wrote when the blog was still on Blogger (290 remain…). This process totally sucked. I did notice a few things:

Either Blogger or the WordPress import tool inserts
<br />
tags for line breaks.

I think every post that is about Richmond involves me complaining and ranting.

Back in those days, I did not understand the beauty of short paragraphs. You can see this in early posts on SS!AB also.

Hindsight is 20/20. I enjoyed my post about how Firefox offered nothing that IE didn’t.

Looking back at my time in Richmond… wow I hate that place even more than before! Absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder when you are talking about hellholes.

It was tough categorizing posts, because I talked about so many different subjects in the same post. I think Blogger still doesn’t have categories, but they might have labels (like tags) now.

Wow, I’ve been blogging for over 5 years. I like to think my writing skills have gotten much better, but we’ll see what I think when I look back at my posts in another 5 years.

I’m not sure when I will get around to fixing up the rest of the entries. WordPress in those days was pretty bad too, from what I remember.
