Flailchain

I don’t like to keep my car key on my normal keychain. I don’t drive very often and the car key is quite bulky, so I just have the car key separate and only take it out when I am driving somewhere. Unfortunately, I have recently dropped the car key a few times from my pocket, which leads me to believe I need to have a keychain on the car key so that it is less likely to slip out. I was browsing Amazon on a whim to see what kind of keychains they had and I found some truly interesting ones

The above review is a good one, but please ignore the advice about sharpening keys and using the kubotan as a flail. This is unlikely to provide any real stopping power to a determined attacker. The kubotan excels as a loadfist weapon, so use it to enhance your hammerfist and punch strikes. You can also use the point to ’stab’ your attacker’s body points and bony targets like the back of the hand can be excruciatingly painful when struck. In other words use the kubotan like it was intended to do so. Nowhere in any traditional yawara training is it used like a mini-flail like the above poster suggested.

What the heck?!?! So of course I had to look up kubotan, and I was not impressed by what I saw. Basically you are still using empty-hands techniques, but your techniques may work a little bit better. Of course in the hands of an expert this can be devastating, but you’re probably better off just putting some mace on your keychain (you see what I did there?) for self-defense. And if I really want to feel safe, I’ll stick with the Mr. T in Your Pocket Talking Keychain.

Baby Elephant

This weekend Bunky and I went to the zoo to see the baby elephant that was just born (Angelina). The elephant was super-duper cute, and since it was only 3 days old it could barely walk. The little trunk and wobbly legs had all the onlookers cooing, and finally Angelina couldn’t stand anymore and had to flop down for a rest.

We had to wait in a line for maybe 15-20 minutes just to see the elephant through the glass. The video in the above link has a much better shot. The zoo was incredibly crowded and temperatures were almost in the 90’s. We tried to get some relief in the aquarium, but the aquarium was completely packed and it was impossible to move around. After about an hour, we left tired and hot. Still, I’d say it was worth it to see the elephants.

We also went to the Oakmont Bakery for the first time. The selection was fantastic!

Shaving

I guess I don’t do a great job of shaving with my electric razor, so Bunky has been pressing me to try using an analog razor. I’ve been following proper steps of shaving after showers so that the facial hairs are soft and I shave with the grain. The razors I use have 3 blades, and I use some nice Kiehl’s product for shaving cream and aftershave. However, I don’t think I will be switching exclusively to razor blades.

The electric razor seems to get a closer shave, ironically. I think this is because I will shave against the grain with the electric razor, as the metal foil prevents the shave from being so close that i get bumps or ingrown hairs. The electric shaver is also a great deal faster and more convenient. Also, you don’t get any razor-burn with the electric shaver.

The regular razor blade had some good points, though. It did much better at getting hairs along the jaw line, and did much better with longer hairs (for when I have been lazy for a few days). It was also more of a ceremony, which felt kinda like pampering. I’ve found that I use the regular razor maybe 1-2 times a week, and the rest of the time I just clean up the stubble on my face with the electric razor.

Melting Pot

Bunky and I tried out fondue for the first time this weekend. We went to The Melting Pot, and it was quite an experience. Bunky doesn’t like cheese so we skipped the cheese fondue, but we tried everything else. The highlight was definitely the chocolate fondue for dessert. They had cheesecake, strawberries, marshmallows, pound cake, etc. to be dipped, and it was delicious. You get a plate for 2 for $16, which is a bit pricey, but is still a much better value than the entree choices.

Both of us were surprised that every entree is cooked at the table, similar to hot pot. But $18 for a salad and a raw, unseasoned chicken breast seems a bit high, even if the chicken is pre-cut for you… Still, it ws a fun (and long) experience, and I would go again for dessert.
