Kiwi finally learned how to crawl forward late last week. He is very strong so it was always a matter of figuring out how to move his limbs in such a way that he could go forward. He’s been able to crawl backwards (very comical) and go from crawling to sitting for a while now, but over the weekend he went from slow forward crawling to moderately fast forward crawling.

Along with some of the boxes for our move to a temporary condo (for a few months), this new ability has made our current condo seem extremely small. Kiwi can now easily cover the entire span of our condo in very little time, and he is so strong that when I try to stop him he just stiff-arms me and breaks the tackle.

Last week Kiwi suddenly figured out how to sit up without using his hands for support. In just one day he went from being really bad at siting to being really good, and this has had tremendous implications. Now, he can sit up on his own and play with toys without my help. While he still likes me to be within line of sight, and usually only plays for 20-30 minutes at a time, this has already made a big difference in my life. I’ve been able to start eating better and blogging more consistently. Thank goodness, because those first few months were hellacious!

Bunky came home to find a crying Kiwi, and she was the only one who could console him. I went to order some food on the phone while she consoled him and took him to the diaper changing station. Unfortunately, just as I started ordering she started yelling at me for not changing Kiwi’s diaper earlier, since it was stuck to him (though I had changed him less than an hour ago).

Waiter on phone: Hi can I take your order?

Bunky: OH HIS BALLS ARE STUCK!!!

Kabitzin: Uh… um…

Waiter on phone: What’s going on over there?

After I explained that my wife was changing a diaper, he understood, but Bunky was laughing so hard that I could barely order while laughing.

It matches all my clothing

Kiwi is getting bigger, and while the Baby Bjorn is very light and easy to put on, it puts all the weight on your upper back. Unfortunately, he also hates his car seat (which I hear is odd), so he refuses to sit in the stroller. After much research Bunky decided we should get the bulkier, more backpack-like Ergobaby as all the Baby Bjorn carriers seemed to suffer from the same design flaws. I was a little unsure about the design, but after seeing a demonstration at the local baby supply shop, I was a believer.

Bunky specifically wanted the midnight blue organic cotton carrier, and we were told by store employee that there would probably be on in that afternoon. We left our number and a note for the employee, but they didn’t keep their promise to call us that afternoon when the shipment arrived. Even worse, after calling up to inquire about the carrier, I was told that they had one blue carrier but it was actually specially ordered for a woman who had already put down a deposit. When they told me I could special order one and they would add it to their order that would be placed in 4-8 weeks, I told them to forget it. A quick visit to Diapers.com found the carrier for the same price, and the legendary super-fast Diapers.com shipping got the carrier to us the next afternoon (I think it was free shipping, too).

Lemme upgrade you

Although Kiwi is quite heavy for his age, he isn’t actually that tall. We had to also buy the infant insert, which is basically a booster seat for the carrier. It makes it so that Kiwi can sit in the carrier comfortably, without having to do a full split to straddle my chest. So far I’m very pleased with the Ergobaby. It’s a little weird (for me at least) carrying the weight on the hips, since I never experienced this during pregnancy, but my back doesn’t hurt after half an hour. I used to be dying after 1-2 hour shopping trips with Bunky, but now it’s not at all painful. The Ergobaby really distributes the weight evenly, and the padding and pocket are very well designed. The main disadvantages of the Ergobaby are that it is a bit bulkier, it is harder to put on by yourself (I’m dextrous enough to do it, but Bunky needs assistance), it takes longer to get the baby in, and it is harder to sit with the Ergobaby on (due to the bulky hip strap). Still, these disadvantages are greatly outweighed by the fact that you can comfortably carry your baby for hours without having back pain afterwards.

Tired...

I’ve been a father for nearly 2 months now, and the sleep situation has been rough. At first Kiwi slept pretty well, going 2-4 hours each nap and his sleep times were steadily creeping up. Then a few weeks ago, he started getting up after 30 minutes to 1.5 hours throughout the night, and this was just absolutely brutal. He’d be really upset when he got up, too. Fortunately, this week has been a little better, because I was going out of my mind. Bunky cut tomato sauce and milk out of her diet to see if that would help, and we started Kiwi on Gripe Water, although he spits most of it out.

I’ve gotten much more skillful in all manners of baby-handling. I’d never handled babies much prior to the birth of my son, but I managed to figure out a lot of tricks on my own. It’s not too different from figuring out a tough nonsensical quest in a game like FFXI, but life is going to be much easier once Kiwi can tell me what the heck he wants all the time (or so I think).

I’m very slowly trying to get back into my daily routine. I haven’t exercised in about 2 months, and it bums me out. I just don’t have any energy to do it, but I’m trying to walk more so that I can work my way back up to weight-lifting and real cardio exercise. Getting back on the diet has been tough too, although I managed to keep from ballooning too much post-pregnancy (although my weight fluctuated a lot more than usual due to infrequent meals).
