Hawaii Day 06

It’s our last full day here in Maui, and tomorrow afternoon we board a plane back to Pittsburgh. The day started off with breakfast at CJ’s Deli and Diner. Bunky had some pancakes and I had a ham and cheese omelet. The food was ok, but nothing spectacular; mostly we ate there because it was near the UPS store. We mailed back Bunky’s wedding dress and it was only $18 to ship! It cost over $50 to get it out to Hawaii… After breakfast we checked out the Lahaina Cannery Mall. The LCM was pretty pathetic, and we breezed through it in about 20 minutes. We did pick up a few more kitschy souvenirs, though.

With our chores done, Bunky and I drove down to Front Street to check out the historic area there. There were tons of little tourist-trap shops there, and we each paid $1 to visit the Wo Hing Society House. It was very small and just reminded me of a rural house in Taiwan, but with two floors. The coolest part was probably the starfruit tree near the cookhouse, and the starfruit looked rather tasty. On our way back we also saw one of the largest Banyan Trees in America. From what I understand, this is what happens when you feed your bonsai tree food after midnight.

It was hot walking along Front Street, so we cooled off by heading to the strip mall area with a Barnes and Noble near the resort. We weren’t extremely hungry for lunch, but I convinced Bunky to go with me to the newly opened Genki Sushi. I just wanted to try some sushi out at Hawaii, and I was extremely pleased to find that it was a conveyor belt sushi place. It was my first time trying out CBSushi, and it was fun and fairly cheap. After lunch we browsed magazines for a while and then hung out at pool for 1-2 hours.

For dinner, we went to Lahaina Grill. It was a Fodor’s Choice, but after last night we were a little wary about Fodor’s taste. The decor of Lahaina Grill was nothing special, and was probably the least scenic place we’ve had dinner at. However, the food made up for it; everything was absolutely incredible. Even the bread with the herb-garlic-butter was delicious. Bunky had a simple pasta with meatballs made from blended veal, pork and beef. I had the Kona Coffee Roasted Rack of Lamb with a Light Coffee-Cabernet demi-glace, and Herb Infused Mashed Potatoes. It was delicious. The lamb was cooked just right, and the coffee taste was subtle (more apparent in the aftertaste). It came with some baby carrots, asparagus, and a whole roasted garlic bulb. It was my first time eating a roasted bulb of garlic and it was so awesome. The cloves came out easily and were spreadable like butter. It added a rich taste to every part of the dish, and the flavors all worked perfectly together.

The dessert was outstanding as well. Bunky had a fantastic Crème Brûlée with berries and a homemade cookie (that Bunky loved). I had the “Road to Hana, Maui” dessert that was made up of layers of Hawaiian vintage chocolate cake, chocolate sour cream mousse, and macadamia nut caramel. It was like a wonderfully smooth chocolate cake that was itself dipped in chocolate; it tasted divine. We were extremely pleased with the meal, and we agreed that Fodor had been redeemed. Unfortunately, we had to start packing once we got back to the hotel. It’s going to be hard to say goodbye to Maui!
