MMA Weekend
Back to back MMA this weekend! I was excited that CBS was showing some MMA, even though I wasn’t really expecting much. Then there was a WEC card on Sunday. Good stuff! Both cards had their moments, and I am ok with silly circus acts if they increase fan awareness.
EliteXC
This card got off to a terrible start, with the bad skanky dancers and the silly fireworks and music. The pacing was awful, and Bunky was angry that in 1.5 hours she saw less than 10 minutes of fighting. However, there were a few good moments. Gina did really well and showed off some good power (thanks to not having to cut weight…). The Lawler-Smith bout was fantastic, but that doctor was too quick on the trigger in calling a no contest. Smith had at least another 3 minutes to recover. That was really a shame, because that match could have really redeemed the card. Finally, the Kimbo fight was retarded, but Thompson made me laugh. Thompson did better than expected, and the bursting ear was… memorable. That was probably the nastiest thing I have ever seen in a fight. The rest of the card was pretty crappy, and the NJ fans were terrible.
WEC
The start wasn’t that great, with some overmatched opponents and tentative fights. The title fights, however, were fantastic. Torres looked great, and that match was very entertaining. I always root for Torres and his mullet. Bunky and I were rooting for Pulver in the main event, but he came up short. I was surprised to see him beaten on his feet, but his takedown defense was excellent. This card helped wash some of the bad EliteXC taste out of my mouth.

like, oh em gee! How are you able to tell they were from Jersey? Is it written on their shirt or something? Why do so many people hate Jersey folks? Don’t worry, I won’t be offended, but could you tell me why Jersey is so hated… is it cause of the Frat Boyz?!? I never got the whole New Jersey jokes…

They were at the Prudential Center in Newark. Don’t worry, I grew up in Jersey, so I know exactly how it is. The fans booed every time there was a break in the action, which is absurd.

That match was pretty lame-ness! They just hugged each other the whole time. I guess I’m too spoiled with anime, cause whenever I see sporting events (which is not too often), I expect some drama or teen rivalry! Kimbo did do a Gazelle Punch… without the whole jumping of course… which just made it an upper cut… (man, I miss Hajime no Ippo) Not even a “SHORYUKEN” sound effect! What a disappointment!… Am I sick for wanting an Empanada after seeing Thompson’s ear?
So you know how it feels to be picked on everyday and shoved into lockers? (err, ok, maybe not locker abuse but a lot of picking!
)
