Let’s Just Forget the Whole Thing

Well, the SATA HD is formatting…

[After some troubleshooting with nothing working]
Velius: [Mentions something about power]
Kabitzin: Wait, how many cords are supposed to be plugged into the SATA? Just one, right?
Velius: Yeah, besides the power.
Kabitzin: So the power and the information transfer are not in one cord?
Velius: No, look at Bunky’s computer, there should be a power supply cord connected next to the normal colored cord.
Kabitzin: Kungfucius is going to kill me.
[Hard drive formatting correctly in the background]
Kabitzin: We have to come up with a better story… like that the motherboard was split in half and I manually soldered it back together by candlelight.
Velius: Riiiiiiiiight.

Oh man, so the reason that the slipstream disc was not working was because the power supply was not connected. In my defense, I have never seen a SATA device before, and when I opened the tower the SATA PS was not connected. This is because while the HD was rat-flailing around in the case, the connector had broken and come off. Fortunately the PS is split and had an intact connector that I was able to plug into. Still, very unpleasant experience all around, and if the HD had been properly attached in the beginning, the original slipstream disc would have fixed everything. Many thanks to Kungfucius, Catnip, and Velius for the hours of tech support and also to the creators of nLite which made the whole slipstreaming process reasonably painless.

HAHAHAH, nice nice :) . congratulations on getting it working finally.

  2. Kungfucius says:

Heh…it’s ok. At least this gives me something else to check if I run into something similar to your problem again :)

  3. Ender says:

I wonder if the slipstream disc was even necessary then; it might have worked the very first time without any extra hassle. I didn’t need to do anything special when I put together my Shuttle; maybe it just depends on the motherboard brand. Anyhoo, I see this as the FNBA gods extracting their payment from you in exchange for your round 1 victory :)

  4. Kabitzin says:

The slipstream disc was necessary because I didn’t have a floppy disc drive. It also ended up saving me the time needed to install SP2, which was very nice!

Of course not everything is peaches and cream, as the onboard audio has not been detected…

  5. Kungfucius says:

    I think there’s a driver for that ;)

  6. Kabitzin says:

Le sigh, have used various drivers, checked that the onboard sound was enabled (“auto” or “disable” the only options), not working.

  7. Catnipped says:

Does your device manager has unknown device section? is audio under there? or it doesn’t even recognize the device?

  8. Kabitzin says:

Under Sound, Game, Video Controllers, the devices are all working but look odd:

    Audio Codecs
    Legacy Audio Drivers
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Media Control Devices
    Video Codecs

There is one unrecognized item with a yellow exclamation mark. It’s a “PCI Device” although I don’t actually have any cards in PCI slots.
