So Intuitive

So the good news is that the cable modem is not the problem, meaning I won’t have to purchase a new one. The bad news is there is some problem with the crappy wiring in the building, and so a technician has to come out and fix the problem. I won’t know when the technician comes over, and they won’t tell me when it’s finished; I will simply notice that the upload/download speeds have improved dramatically. The Comcast guy was like, “Yeah, I know, maddening.” Exactly. Apparently other people have been complaining a lot about various problems with cable, and it seems that the electricians have done a super shoddy job of wiring the building. I was also told that I should replace the cheap cable (that Comcast sent me), because that might help the signal.

It was especially sad watching the technician two-finger typing on my keyboard and staring blankly at the DOS screen while he tried to remember the command for pinging. Eventually I couldn’t take it anymore and blurted out, “Maybe try ping url/ip?” Amazing, yes, I know.

I guess it is another 1-2 days before the cable is fixed…

Awesome, you should have said that your computer was coin-oped and that he needed to stick a $20 bill in to get it to follow his commands.

My cable guy actually spent a large chunk of time “verifying” the operation of the internet connection, i.e. browsing sports scores. It took a lot of subtle prodding to get him to leave.
