Bunky and the Blender

Someone’s been instilling some serious FUD in Bunky about her eating habits, and suddenly she is worried that her arm might just fall off or something. Apparently she is only getting some miniscule amount of nutrition from her diet of snack foods and frozen foods, so this weekend, she had a major impulse to buy a blender.

See, this nice smoothie place opened up right near our apartment a little while ago, and Bunky feels that she could really go for some fresh smoothies every once in a while. So we picked up a blender, and then bought a prodigious amount of fresh and canned fruit (oranges, blueberries, canned lychees, canned pineapples, cantaloupe, pomegranate-cherry juice, nectarines, etc.) as well as some natural yogurt and orange juice concentrate.

The first smoothie was a raspberry, blueberry, orange, and yogurt blend. We forgot to get sugar or honey, but Bunky seemed convinced that it would be fine because the raspberries would add sweetness. Ummm, unfortunately my recollections of the true nature of raspberries was correct, and the smoothie ended up being rather… tart. I’m going to pilfer some sugar packets from the coffee station at work, and maybe the next one will be better.

Our big fear is that we will quickly scrap the smoothie idea and start making milkshakes instead orz.

You could try adding sherbert to the mix; I’ve found that it improves the consistency as well as enhancing the sweetness without adding fat.

good idea! we’ll have to make a trip to the supermarket again… or the nearest Ben & Jerry’s for Free Cone Day on Tuesday.

Or if all else fails, you can always just eat the fruit plain. Less spectacular, same effect.

Ender, we just tried orange sherbert and mango, SO GOOD. Oh, Niceu Idea!

Velius, you are talking crazy talk now. When you add sherbert, you become well fed.

Some of the more popular smoothie places over here actually add ice cream (!!!) as the smoothie base, which kinda defeats the whole “healthy” aspect. But man, does it taste goooood. I imagine frozen yogurt would also work though.

I don’t know how they get their ice chopped into such fine bits while still maintaining a thick texture though.

Mmm..I love fruit smoothies. Yeah, I’ve found that adding some honey helps with making stuff sweeter.

For smoothies, I prefer to use icing sugar - the granules are smaller and dissolve into the (colder) mix much more easily.
