Obvious BF2: SF Fixes

For any of you trying (foolishly) to use the EA Games Downloader to get Battlefield 2: Special Forces, here are some tips for getting the game to actually install:

  • As soon as the download completes, you cannot install the game because you will receive a completely unhelpful error (Error 32791:5) that isn’t even comprised of words, only numbers. This means you should reinstall the downloader program. Do Not uninstall it first, however, because you will have to redownload the game files, and you’ll get the same error again. Just reinstall the downloader on top of itself. Yeah, totally retarded.
  • If the game asks you to insert Disc 1 when you attempt to install the game files, do not panic. Although it is impossible to insert the game disc (which you will not have, since you bought the downloader version), this is ok, because the error message is once again wrong. What has probably happened is that your anti-virus software, in a misguided attempt to protect you, has quarantined the crappy Gamespy Arcade file that EA tried to sneak onto your computer. Once you restore that file, the game should install, and an EA representative will then break into your house and steal your TV.
  • EA “Customer Support” is not actually comprised of humans. Instead, it is just a simple script that will send you an auto-reply and then proceed to ignore all further communication.

I swear I’m not bitter about how this process went at all! Thanks to Velius, Catnip, and all the various other tortured souls who post on forums for helping me spot these obvious fixes.

10% Off Next Winning Auction

Those of you who like eBay and are willing to use Paypal, this is a potentially super coupon that eBay is offering for 10% off your next winning auction.

Free Flu Shot

Just got my free flu shot at work! It was first cancelled (I think the original stabbing date was early October), but I guess they managed to steal someone else’s needles or something, so it was put back on the calendar. I had to have one arm out of my dress shirt, like I was in an old samurai movie.

More Battlefield Bugginess

Ugh, been spending so long trying to get this retarded Battlefield 2: Special Forces expansion to work. It’s bad enough that there’s no discount over the retail version, but the download was kinda slow, and the installation has been buggy as hell so far. First the installation gave some wacko number string error (wow, thanks for the helpful error messages), but I managed to fix that after browsing some forums and finding that it had to do with port forwarding. After forwarding the EA downloader ports, I was able to continue with installation, but now the installer keeps asking me to install disc 1 (but of course there is no disc in insert, because it was legally downloaded with their downloader). BF2 is so damn buggy, and the expansion looks like it’s continuing right where they left off.
