I get cramps often, after the gym of during my sleep. I TRY to stop them from coming, but sometimes Im not so lucky. Last week I got atleast 8 cramps while I was asleep. At one point BOTH of my legs, NOT the calf but the front of my legs, were cramping! I had to walk them off, its what I usually do. My brother is a doctor and all he says is to take vitamins and drink water! I drink tons of water daily, eat fruits and vegetables and STILL get woken up with that cramping! Its so awful. Last night I had the charlie horses during my sleep again, after trying to walk off about 6 charlie horses during the night I thought about the one thing that was common between the 2 nights. Before I went to bed I had gone out to dinner and ate sushi. I am in LOVE with sushi and I always eat it with the low sodium soy sauce. I usually eat sushi about 2-3 times a week. Theres is this amazing place near my house where they offer UNLIMITED sushi. Since sushi is expensive, I try to go there as often as I can. So these past 2 times I consumed almost 2x's the amount of salt I eat in a week! Thats the only common thing I can come up with. The pain was so horrible that i was bawling so hard I woke my poor sister up. I read some of the comments and I saw someone put that the cold helps. I believe thats true. My sister handed me a cold press and I set it under my foot. It definitely helped. Ive been trying to research this, but theres really not a common cure for these. I just hope I dont get anymore, so just to test it out Im going to my favorite unlimited sushi restaurant and Im going to leave out the soy sauce. Hopefully that will be my cure. Ive never paid attention to what I had eaten during the day, but since Im in a routine now during my days its the only possible answer I can come up with. My salt in take. My sister says since I had the abnormal amount I usually in, it retained my water in the wrong places instead of letting it flow naturally through my body. I hope shes right, the pain is unbearable.

I got sone so bad (right leg only) sitting in the DDS chair and they had to stop and wheel me out in an office chair on casters to the parking area where they called my son to pick me up. How embarrassing is this? I had 2 more since and for the life of me do not know why. The soreness after the extreme attack lasts for 4-5 days.

It's difficult to watch oneself properly while sleeping. But it seems to me that most, if not all the leg and foot cramps, small or intense, which wake me up from sleep occur (1) while I'm deeply in my dreams, (2) as my body is almost "frozen" motionless, which is frequently the case when I'm dreaming deeply, and (3) as I'm concurrently going through some sort of low-level hyper-ventilation (also seems to belong to the deep dream picture).

This would fit with an observation related to the so-called "Verigo-Bohr effect" (named after Russian physiologist B. F. Verigo and Danish physician Ch. Bohr), aka. "Verigo effect" or "Bohr effect":

http://tinyurl.com/ku4npn

which leads to correlating the body's ratios of oxygen and carbon dioxyde with hyper-ventilation. Now, one of the symptoms allegedly resulting from a shortage of CO2 is, yes, cramps.

I'm not a physiologist, so does this say something to anyone else?

There is some stuff about the "Bohr effect" on Wikipedia in English, but the entry in Italian and especially the one in German are more exhaustive.
