Even Better!

I was originally going to post about how I deduced that the “super squirrel” that was terrorizing the new feeder was in reality a raccoon, but something better just came up. Bunky was telling me a story about how she tried to call a camp ground to find out if they allow camp fires on their premise. Bunky’s pretty shy, and easily flabbergasted, so it took a long time for her to work up the courage to call. When she did call, I guess the girl on the other end of the phone said something really fast and Bunky got tongue-tied and just hung up. That’s when, get this, the girl *69′ed her and called her back! I think Bunky picked up and when she realized who it was, she made sure she didn’t say anything and then she hung up again. Just classic. I was dying when I heard this story. I was laughing for a full minute as Bunky squeeked “Shut up! SHUT UP!!!!” on the other end.

Bunky made me call the place. It took less than 15 seconds to find out that camp fires are allowed.

Practice Makes Perfect

There was a mysterious and unexpected shortage of staff today, so this morning I was asked to give a series of presentations in the afternoon. The problem was that I knew absolutely nothing about the material in the presentations, and had never worked on the subject matter at all. Not only that, I had to give the presentation to 4 different groups. Major embarrassment seemed imminent.

Even worse, I was busy most of the morning, so I had no choice but to skip my lunch and… cram. My cramming skills were kinda rusty and I only had about 40 minutes to cram 10 pages of knowledge in so the first presentation was not super successful. No one said anything mean to me about it, but there were several questions asked that I didn’t know the answer to. I was trying my best and striving not to read from printouts, but at the very least I wasn’t that nervous. Quite frankly, I had pretty low expectations about my performance, so I was pleased with anything better than “total disaster”.

Luckily with practice, I got much better and I was totally able to fake it through the last two presentations. Someone was even asking me if I had been doing these presentations for a long time. I had no choice but to confess that I hadn’t known any of this until this morning.

I think the moral of this story is that cramming works and that anything worth learning/faking can be learned/faked the morning of. That, and eating is overrated.

Steamroom

For the last month of so of summer, the air conditioning has been broken in the area I work at. Yesterday it was fixed, and I was all ready to comment about how much better this was, but today I think it’s back to being broken again. Let’s face it, work is almost never fun, but when there’s no a/c and it’s over 90 degrees inside & outside with super high humidity, the day just seems to drag on forever. I really hope that it gets re-fixed soon, because I am getting tired of being steamed in my own sweat.

On a happier note, how great was it that Detroit took down LA in the NBA finals! If ever there was a team that did not deserve to win, it was the Lakers. I felt bad for Karl Malone and Shaq, but the way the Piston defense absolutely demolished the Lakers was a thing a beauty. Quite frankly, the Lakers were lucky they didn’t get swept. As for my beloved Knicks… well, they still suck.

Free Upgrade?

It seems that Yahoo mail has gotten a face-lift and added some features (more space and some other stuff that they blabbed about that I didn’t read). I’m guessing that it must be in response to this Gmail thing from Google that has been in the news. Whatever the reason, I’m glad that they revamped their service, because it was starting to look a little long in the tooth. I especially like the 100 Mb of space (up from 6!) because email really fills up the space, especially when you save sent messages. When I logged on, I was surprised to see the changed page, and my first reaction was to think that it was some kind of scam or advertisement. Ah, the cynicism of web surfing =).
